Business Studies
Pupils have the opportunity to study business at KS4 (years 10 and 11) through Edexcel GCSE Business Studies. GCSE Business Studies examines all major areas of business activity and provides students with skills and knowledge that will assist them in their future careers. GCSE Business Studies also provides a launch pad for further study in Business, Economics, Commerce and Accounts.
Topics covered include enterprise, business structures, marketing, human resources, finance, accounts and production. Business Studies lessons are taught in computer suites and students have the chance to develop their ICT, data analysis, research, presentational and entrepreneurial skills..
Business Studies is a vocational course and we have current links with Birmingham City Football Club, Coca Cola, The Premier League, Cadbury’s, Rolls Royce and Mughal-e-azam. Our students currently participate in numerous regional enterprise competitions and a national investment competition. In 2016, 8 of our Year 10 pupils reached the grand final of the Coca Cola Real Business Challenge in London. Other recent successes include first prize for one of our year 11 pupils in the 2012 South Birmingham College Dragons Den competition, an event in which four more of our pupils also made the final.
The Hall Green Business Studies Department has also developed a Dragons Den style Enterprise day of its own in partnership with Birmingham Future. This has event has proved an outstanding success and is now being delivered in other schools across the city. In 2015, 81% of Year 11 pupils gained a C grade or above, with over 30% gaining an A*/A grade.
GCSE Business Studies is assessed through terminal examinations worth 75% of their final grade and controlled assessment which is worth 25% of their final grade.
