At Key Stage 3
All pupils have two hours per week of PE and Games. PE is delivered in a ‘mixed’ gender setting for all activities. Pupils are taught all aspects of the PE National Curriculum including games (football, netball, rugby, cricket, rounders, tennis, basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, badminton), swimming, dance, athletics, gymnastics and outdoor and adventurous activities. All year 7 and 8 pupils are given the opportunity to attend an overnight camp or a day session at Blackwell Outdoor Pursuits Centre and participate in a range of outdoor activities.
At Key Stage 4
All pupils have two hours per week of PE and Games and follow the “Passport to Fitness” pathway for core PE. This is a non-examination pathway which encompasses practical performance in a range of activities, fitness, healthy lifestyles, leadership and First Aid. Pupils will also be able to opt for an OCR Cambridge National GCSE qualification in Sport Science or Sport Studies which will be delivered during an option block, giving an additional two hours within the subject. More information about these courses can be found in the Options Booklets.
We are very proud of our SEND provision in PE and all pupils take part in PE and Games to a challenging level due to the adaptations we can make to every activity. We also offer SEND-specific activities and extra-curricular opportunities.
The school hosts two School Games Organisers – the Hall Green Partnership and Central Partnership. This provides pupils with a wealth of opportunities to participate in events and become leaders in various activities, and engages many of our Primary feeder schools too. We were fortunate to be offered the opportunity to take a group of students to London in 2021 to be flag bearers at the launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
We believe in ‘sport for all’ and offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities before, during and after school. As well as inter-house competitions in football, netball and basketball, the pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in most team games. Sports Day is also an annual event for all pupils in year 7, 8, 9 and 10. We have many links to local clubs and groups, some of whom come in to school to provide activities for pupils and provide information about these club links on the PE noticeboard and through form messages. We are also involved in a number of initiatives including the ECB Chance to Shine programme and the Barclays Girls Football School Partnership, for which we are a hub school. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is offered to year 9, 10 and 11 pupils at Bronze & Silver Level.
